The Sunday evening lesson for November 14, 2021.
Channels Only (2 Timothy 2:20-26)Phillip Stuckey, November 14, 2021
Part of the Hymn Studies series, preached at a Sunday Evening service
In 2 Timothy, the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy to be careful around those who were false teachers and who were unfaithful Christians (2 Tim. 2:14-19). He used the picture of a large house as a metaphor for the church. Just as there are some articles in a house that are expensive and used for special occasions, there are also others that are inexpensive and used for ordinary or even dishonorable purposes. In the same way, in a church there may be those who are faithful and useful to the Lord and there may be those who are no longer faithful and no longer being useful. Surely none of us want to be unfit for the Master’s use. What must we do and what must happen, for us to be fit for the His use? Let’s consider the hymn, Channels Only, to remind us of some of the things we must do. * Note: The first several minutes of the sermon are not available on the recording.

2 Timothy 2:20–26 (Listen)
20 Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.
