Our Responsibilities To One Another (Ephesians 4:11-16)

Phillip Stuckey, July 28, 2019
Part of the Church 101 series, preached at a Sunday Evening service

Being a part of a local church is a part of God’s plan and purpose for every person who has been born again (Acts 2:42-47; 9:26-30; 13:1-3; 14:25-28). Being a part of a local church is about a relationship with the Lord and with one another and is pictured in scripture as a body, a temple, and a family with every member contributing to the common good of all (1 Cor. 12:25-26; John 13:34-35). As we noted before, it is a covenanted community of believers who have banded together to work and worship together in a manner worthy of the gospel (Eph. 4:1). Every relationship that is of any value involves mutual responsibilities and this is true in our relationship in the local church. What are some of our responsibilities to one another?

Ephesians 4:11–16 (Listen)

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
