The Lord Upholds My Life

The Sunday lesson for June 7, 2020.

The Lord Upholds My Life (Psalm 54:1-7)

Phillip Stuckey, June 7, 2020
Part of the Exposition of the Psalms series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

What do you do when someone you have helped or someone you thought was a friend, ally, or confidant turns against you? How do you deal with fear, despair, anger, and frustration? Do you confront them and give them a piece of your mind or take some other action to make them pay? In the fifty-fourth psalm, another short psalm attributed to David, we are reminded again to go to God and put our trust in the one who will never leave or forsake those faithful to Him.

Psalm 54 (Listen)

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Maskil of David, when the Ziphites went and told Saul, “Is not David hiding among us?”

54:1   O God, save me by your name,
    and vindicate me by your might.
  O God, hear my prayer;
    give ear to the words of my mouth.
  For strangers have risen against me;
    ruthless men seek my life;
    they do not set God before themselves. Selah
  Behold, God is my helper;
    the Lord is the upholder of my life.
  He will return the evil to my enemies;
    in your faithfulness put an end to them.
  With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
    I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.
  For he has delivered me from every trouble,
    and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.
